Nicole’s love of politics is rooted in her belief in the power of community organizing to bring about positive change and improve people’s lives. Nicole is a co-founder and Principal of 50+1 Strategies.
Nicole Derse is one of the nation’s premier political organizers and consultants. In 2015, Nicole was awarded the American Association of Political Consultants’ prestigious “40 under 40 Award” for her work leading successful campaigns throughout California and across the country. Nicole had led 50+1 Strategies’ clients to a 95% win record over the last four years.
Nicole has over fifteen years experience running and winning electoral and issue campaigns.
She has worked at the grassroots level to elect community-based candidates and spearhead progressive initiatives like an increased minimum wage and mandatory paid sick leave for workers. Nicole joined Obama for America in March 2007 as one of the campaign’s first staffers and rose to become the statewide Field Director in her home state of Wisconsin during the 2008 general election.
Nicole is one of the leading trainers in the country. From 2009-2011, she served as the National Director of Training & Organizational Development for Organizing for America, developing and leading training programs for hundreds of national staff and tens of thousands of volunteers around the critical fight for health insurance reform. Nicole has led trainings in 27 states and four different countries. She is one of the senior trainers on Wellstone Action’s team.
Nicole has a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Studies from Macalester College and a Master’s in Literature and Creative Writing from Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English. She is a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of San Francisco’s McCarthy Center for Public Service & the Common Good. Nicole also serves on the National Advisory Board for Organizing for Action and recently won the San Francisco Women’s Political Committee’s Woman Visionary Award.
In her free time, Nicole loves to read excellent novels, zip around on her bike across San Francisco and Oakland, and eat popcorn and drink wine with her amazing friends and family.
